Cleveland Indians – About Them

Cleveland Indians are a professional baseball team that has been playing in the city since 1869. Known as the Cleveland Spiders in their early years, the team shifted to a new ballpark called League Park in 1891. Louis Sockalexis was the main player of the team at that time. In early years as a franchise, the team’s biggest star was Napoleon Lajoie. To honor him, the Cleveland Indians were also nicknamed as Naps. In 1910, Joe Jackson, another legendary batter, joined the Cleveland roster.

The 1920 Indians were triumphant in most of their matches and the two decades that followed brought some great stars and unforgettable moments. Players like Earl Averill, Mel Harder and Lou Boudreau, a new stadium, and new ownership were some positive changes that came about in the team. The Indians shifted to the new Cleveland Municipal Stadium in 1932.

It was in the 1940s that the Indians were bolstered by veterans like Boudreau, Ray Mack and Feller. Then, Bill Veeck purchased the club and ushered the next great era. He put the Indians in Cleveland Municipal Stadium on a full-time basis from 1947. Veeck made some good decisions and signed some good players like Larry Doby, the A.L.’s first African-American player (in 1947) and Satchel Paige. It was because of these efforts that, in 1948, Indians won the World Series.

In the 1950s, the Clevelands had a new management. Frank Lane became the new GM and his hasty decisions gave him the nickname of “Trader Lane.” He was followed by Gabe Paul. Through the 1960s and 1970s, the Indians suffered economically and their club changed hands frequently. There were constant rumors of relocating the team as well. In this period, Andre Thornton Thornton who battled injuries and personal tragedy was given a place of honor in the team.

Most of the early 1980 was sparked only by individual accomplishments and hardly any team glory. So Cleveland hosted the 1981 All-Star Game to make a comeback. In 1980s, voting was also carried on for a new ballpark for the team. Finally, the team’s fortunes took an upswing with the curtain call at Cleveland Stadium in 1993.

After winning 91 games and taking down the NL Central in 2009, the St. Louis Cardinals once again are the clear favorite to win the division heading into 2010.  As usual, the Chicago Cubs are expected to make some noise but will need comeback years from Carlos Zambrano and Alfonzo Soriano to have a chance while the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds have talented lineups but pitching issues that will likely keep them out of postseason contention. Bringing up the bottom of the division looks to be the Houston Astros and the Pittsburgh Pirates, two teams that don’t seem to have the level of healthy talent to compete with some of the better teams in the division.

With arguably the best player in the game in Albert Pujols, the St. Louis Cardinals once again have a stacked lineup that is sure to give fits to NL pitchers all season long.  In addition to Pujols, who won his third MVP award last season, the Cardinals will have slugger Matt Holiday for an entire season as well as other big bats like Ryan Ludwick to carry their lineup through the season.

But what separates the Cardinals from the rest of the division isn’t the presence of Pujols in the lineup.  The Cardinals boast perhaps the best one-two punch at the top of their rotation in Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.  After a strong 2008 season, Wainwright broke out in 2009, going 19-8 with a 2.63 ERA, which was one of the best in the entire league.  Carpenter also came back strong from injuries and returned to his previously dominating form.  With a microscopic ERA of 2.24, Carpenter was one of the few pitchers to have a lower ERA than Wainwright and heads into the 2010 season with high hopes of another year of dominance.  Additions like Brad Penny into their rotation also should help the Cardinals down the stretch and it seems likely that they will shoot more towards winning 100 games this season.

The Chicago Cubs, on the other hand, are looking to bounce back from a very disappointing 2009 season.  After winning the division in 2008, the Cubs were a trendy pick to return to the postseason and maybe even the World Series in 2009, though they were hampered by injury and underperforming superstars.  Derek Lee and ace Carlos Zambrano got off to slow starts last season and star outfielder Alfonzo Soriano was injured for a good chunk of the year.  When Soriano was in the lineup, he still wasn’t very effective and batted just .241 with 20 home runs and 55 RBIs in 117 games; with a salary of million in 2009, Soriano’s lack of production is a significant problem for the Cubs.

With Aramis Ramirez and a healthy Soriano, however, the Cubs still do have plenty of talent to make a push in 2010.  If Zambrano can stay on track all season, the Cubs even have a very strong rotation, with Ted Lily and Ryan Dempster being nice options as well.  A lot of things will have to go right for the Cubs to win the division in 2010, but they have the best chance outside of the Cardinals.  With two heavily talented teams at the top of the division, however,

Technically speaking, it was the Los Angeles Dodgers that started to commercialize baseball. When the team was formed in the late 1800, amateur baseball leagues have gained popularity amongst the people who loved the game.

When the teams were transported from New York to California, the rivalry was merely transplanted. In 1958, the Dodgers became the seeds from Los Angeles while the Giants represented San Francisco.

But before being the Los Angeles Dodgers as they are known today, the team was named the Brooklyn Robins in the early 1900’s. This is because of team manager Wilbert Robinson who had restored the team’s reputation in the league. He did so by motivating the team to reach the World Series in the years 1916 and 1920.

Wilbert Robinson was replaced by Max Carey when he retired in 1931. The team was almost named as the Brooklyn Canaries then, which was after Carey this time, whose last name was really Carnarius. However, that didn’t happen. Instead, their original name Brooklyn Dodgers was restored.

During the 1930’s, the Dodgers were even more determined to rebuild the team and become strong contenders to the title. Larry MacPhail, the Dodger’s general manager during that time, was joined by Branch Rickey in forming a team that is composed by Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella, Carl Furillo, and Duke Snider. All together, they won five pennants from 1941 to 1953. However, they were beaten by another New York team, the Yankees, in all of those series. The resilient team and the eager fans never lost hope though. And with their eyes on their goal, their slogan became “Wait til next year!” The “next year” came in 1955, when the Dodgers beat the Bronx Bombers to obtain the much awaited championship title.

When Walter O’Malley gained majority ownership of the team in 1950, he started thinking of buying a land in Brooklyn to build a stadium that is way better and more accessible than the Ebbets Field where the Dodgers are playing. Being a real estate businessman, he tried to look for the most suitable place until he decided that the piece of land that he needs exactly is not in Brooklyn. That is when he started to consider Los Angeles, California.

In a sport that is a marathon and not a sprint, baseball fans certainly do get overzealous on opening day, though it’s hard to blame them.  When highly touted rookie outfielder Jason Heyward hit a three-run blast in his very first swing in the big leagues, many began chomping at the bit to say that he is the real deal.  Some were even comparing him to A-Rod.  But at 20 years old, Heyward, who is certainly an unbelievable talent, still has a long season ahead of him to prove that he’s worthy of the enormous expectations, which he helped bring with just one mighty swing of his bat against the Chicago Cubs on opening day.

This isn’t to say that Heyward won’t be the next superstar in the league, as all signs certainly point to a very bright future.  Every now and then, however, baseball reminds us how truly unpredictable it can be.  In his first career at bat, infielder Kaz Matsui hit a towering homerun that had Mets fans jumping for joy – and then hit just six more all season long.  Since, Matsui has been a marginal starter that has been shuffled around to various teams.  Pitcher Bud Smith tallied a no-hitter as a rookie in 2001, though he only played one more season in the majors.  Then there was Rick Ankiel, who wowed St. Louis Cardinals fans as a 20-year-old phenom and was the talk of the town due to a wicked slider and a blazing fastball.  Currently, he plays outfield for the Kansas City Royals.

There is, of course, no reason to think that Heyward will follow the paths of any of those guys, but we won’t know much about his long-term potential in this league until he faces the daily grind of 162 regular season games.  What we do know about Heyward is that he has a wealth of talent, not to mention a maturity level that is well beyond players his age, which will certainly help sell <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link/2181670']);” href=”http://www.stubhub.com/atlanta-braves-tickets/”>Atlanta Braves tickets</a>.  In fact, he’s probably more level-headed and mature than half the players in the league at the ripe age of 20, at least as long as guys like Milton Bradley and Miguel Cabrera are still strolling around big league dugouts.

How can one be so certain about his maturity, one might ask?  For that outlook, you can thank Bobby Cox, who made Heyward his opening day starter in his last season as the Braves’ manager.  While Cox certainly would have rather gone with a veteran with more experience, as he often has done in his tenure with the Braves, it was quite clear to Cox early on that he wasn’t dealing with a young prospect with an equal measure of talent and sense of entitlement.  Backed by two dedicated parents who were both Dartmouth grads, Heyward is anything but your average 20-year-old who in another life could be attending frat parties and snoozing through early morning college courses.  So cool-headed and mature was Heyward during the Braves’ spring training that Cox plugged him into the starting lineup and didn’t think twice about it.

Though plenty of minor league prospects have power, few have the mental makeup of Heyward, which is something that has already separated him from the other highly touted prospects his age and should continue to do the same on the big league level.  While it’s easy to be awed by his power and raw talent, there is plenty else to be impressed by with Heyward, though he will have to continue to perform up to lofty expectations throughout the grueling 2010 season to remain in the good graces of baseball fans.  The truth is, we won’t know how good Heyward is until he faces his first major slump and reactionary fans begin saying that he’s overrated.  It’s in the valleys of his rookie season that will ultimately show us the most about his character and outlook as a major league player.  With his mental pedigree and mature outlook, however, no one understands that better than Jason Heyward.

You’ve heard the phrase “America’s past time” before. If you haven’t, there is another issue at hand we need to address. The first thought that probably immediately crosses your mind is sports. More specifically, baseball. But not for you die hard football fans out there. Oh no! “American football is America’s TRUE past time and is the only CORRECT form of football,” you say to yourself. Sports is a form of patriotism and a way to show your pride in where you’re from. For some it’s simply an outlet to channel your aggression or gambling habits. Regardless of why YOU love sports, us fans all encounter the same problem—the staggering prices of tickets. We are forced to watch our favorite teams on television because getting to the game is becoming all the more impossible, especially with the turmoil of the economy. Nor can some of us afford the premium cable packages that include a gazillion sports channels. Though we still jump off the couch and bump chests with our buddies when our team scores, nothing can quite beat the experience of seating in a sea of fellow fans waving foam fingers and trash talking to opposing teams—of course you can trash talk from your couch but people look at you crazy when you talk to your TV. Well a new era has arrived. No longer do we have to live vicariously through our friends that DO manage to make it to the game.
