Young or old, new to the game or not, no one likes to strike out.  So, when I see players struggling with making contact while at bat I simply ask, “How do you feel at the plate?”  Most often, the response is the same, “Coach, I’m not seeing the ball.”

My response?  Use your imagination.  Throughout my career in baseball, I’ve developed hitting drills that convert complex techniques into easy-to-learn applications using imagery.  My system is practically fool proof, requiring only a player’s willingness to imagine and a desire to succeed.

So how can we use imagery to help batters “see the ball?”

We hear players say it all the time, especially after striking out.  Following the ball from pitch to plate is a serious challenge for many hitters, yet we know that the ability to read the pitch and make proper judgment is as important as anything in becoming an efficient hitter.  This also decreases rushing and increases confidence.

Let’s imagine that the ball is a target. If we want to hit the bull’s eye on a target, then it is necessary to aim for the bull’s eye. If the outer ring will give us 10 points, and the bull’s eye will give us 100 points, what part do we focus on? The bull’s eye, of course. It gives us the highest reward.

With this in mind, let’s do a few “making connections” hitting drills, using either regular batting practice or a pitching machine.

1.     Stand in the batter’s box. Take a deep breath.

2.     Stand tall with a soft body, soft in the hinge joints.

3.     As ball is pitched, keep eyes horizontal, placing a quarter-size imaginary

red dot in center of ball.

4.     Read pitch all the way to catcher, using just the swivel of the head. Move

nothing else.

5.     Repeat several times.

1.     Begin as in Drill #1.

2.     As ball is pitched, load and stride, reading pitch back to catcher.

3.     Continue to visualize bull’s eye.

4.     Important: Do not move hands from starting position.

5.     In the stride, front heel remains up, with 30-40% weight now on front side.

6.     Hips remain closed.

7.     Repeat several times.

1.     Begin as in the first two drills.

2.     Pivot hips at completion of stride.

3.     Important: Hands rotate with body; they do not commit to the pitch.

4.     Hitter is now taking pitch in “drive position.”

5.     Visualize where “cut” or cut line on the ball will be.

6.     Read ball to “contact zone” in front of plate.

7.     Repeat several times.

1.     Batter reads pitch in loose body.

2.     Visualize the proper cut line and take pitch.

3.     Take several full swings, use same cut line.

4.     Each time, visualize a positive hit.

5.     Repeat several times.

Through repetition, these visualization drills will dramatically improve a batter’s hand action.  The batter will no longer swing to contact, but snap at the point of contact, yielding a remarkable and measurable improvement in speed and contact-ability.

There are several aids which can be helpful in the training of your baseball team.

Sliding Area.

The time to teach sliding is when a boy begins to play baseball. He is closer to the ground and eager to learn. Let the grass grow 6 or 8 inches high in foul territory at the end of a bullpen or outside the outfield fence. This is all the cushion the player needs.

Place a loose (detached) base in the center of the sliding area. Every boy who is physically fit should practice sliding every time he goes to the field, sliding three or four times to the right and three or four times to the left so that he forms the correct habit pattern and has no fear of sliding. He should wear sliding pads, basketball trunks, or heavy swimming shorts to avoid skin burns.

Pitching Target

The pitching strings, introduced to professional baseball by Branch Rickey, provide a target for a pitcher. Two strike zones are recommended. They are erected over home plates in the bullpen. (The bullpens, incidentally, should face in the same direction as the pitcher’s mound and home plate.) They can be built of scrap lumber, painted white, and anchored to the ground with wooden pegs for this purpose.

Poles 2 by 4 inches can be stuck into the ground approximately 10 feet apart with the 4-inch sides parallel to the pitcher’s mounds. The poles should be lined up so that cords strung between them will be directly above the front of each home plate. One string should be at the average knee-high height of Little League batters and the other string at the average armpit height of a majority of batters in each league.

The strings, which can be obtained in hardware stores, should be of strong white cord similar to a carpenter’s marking line. Once the cross-strings have been stretched, vertical strings at the width of each home plate should be strung between the cross-strings directly above the sides of a home plate to complete the strike zone.

Practice pitching mounds should be erected the proper pitching distance from the strike zones, and again practice pitching slabs can be built from scrap lumber, painted white, and anchored to the ground with wooden pegs.

When pitchers warm up, using the strike zone for a target, this practice can be made more realistic by having a batter stand in the batter’s box. In this way the batter has a chance to judge strikes and balls and become familiar with the pitched ball, and the pitcher gets used to pitching to a batter.

After a few sessions, the batter can start his swing and then pull back to get the practice of checking his swing when the pitch is bad. This is a good drill for the batter, but he should never go through with the swing because it would break the strings and might injure someone working out elsewhere.

Batting Range

If there is space near your playing field, develop a batting tee range. A net or canvas can be strung between poles or buildings. The size of the area is not too important, but an area from 8 to 10 feet high and 30 feet wide is recommended. This would take care of three batting tees and batters at one time.

By using a woolen practice ball, the batting tee area could be set up beside a building or any other barrier which would eliminate the necessity of going a long distance to retrieve the batted ball. A woolen practice ball will carry far enough in flight to determine whether the batter is hitting line drives, grounders, or high flies, and will eliminate the breaking of windows and other hazards of that nature. Again if no area is available, tees can be set up behind the regular field backstop and balls can be hit against the backstop. Use a rubber-covered baseball, plastic ball, or tennis ball if woolen balls are not available.

With these few aids, training your team can become much more effective.

If I see a great hitter get up to the plate and he is just dying to clobber me, I would not hesitate to work him “low and away” with my pitches and occasionally throw the fastball six inches or so off the inside corner of the plate. The other day someone asked me what the goal of a sales call should be. And it got me thinking about baseball.

Even if you’re not a baseball fan, stick with me here. I’m talking about how to implement your sales game plan to gear up for a long, successful season.

Actually, I’m more of a football and basketball fan myself, but this baseball analogy made too much sense to pass up.

But first, let’s talk about how your philosophy can impact your overall game.

I work with my clients to transform their sales philosophy so “sales” is equated with “service,” no matter where the prospect is in the sales cycle.

“Sales = Service”

The goal of your sales call is to find a way to offer help and work with that prospect (not “pitch to” them) towards realizing some value gained from your interaction. That value you provide should be appropriate and proportionate to your own business goals and needs.

So when you contact a prospect, the main question on your agenda should be:

“How can I help this person make their job and life better?”

This approach solves A LOT of confusion, anxiety and uncertainty, and it also creates a very effective, ethical and enjoyable sales process for both parties.

If the result of your contact ends up simply being the chance for you to give some advice, resources or other form of value, great.

They’ll appreciate and remember you for it.

If the outcome is to set up a face-to-face, phone or web meeting to offer more time for an in-depth conversation, solution or advisory session, even better.

If your call ends up being a sale that’s going to solve all their problems, that’s obviously awesome.

But even if it turns out that they don’t need your help, that’s good, too.
