PostHeaderIcon Develop Your Baseball Skills and Knowledge

Do you have the desire to learn how to play baseball successfully? Are you a casual or moderate baseball fan who only sometimes watches or listens to a professional baseball game but would like to know exactly how the game is played and governed by the standard rules? You will learn how to develop good baseball skills and techniques and you will learn how the game is played.

How Players Hone their Batting Skills

Major League baseball players hone their hitting skills by taking batting practice inside a batting cage before game time. They place a baseball on a tee to hit or let a machine feed them pitches. Players also get hitting tips from the hitting coach.

How to Hit a Pitch

To hit a fly ball, swing the bat toward the bottom edge of the ball as it comes toward the plate. To hit a line drive, swing the bat toward the middle of the ball. To hit a ground ball, swing the bat toward the top edge of the ball.

Where to Hit the Ball

You must try to hit the ball away from the fielders on the other team. When I played softball in my gym class as a high school senior, I always focused on hitting a hard line drive toward the middle of the infield. I got away with it the first time, lining it past the second baseman, but the next time he was there waiting for my line drive. I should have tried to hit the ball toward the third base side where there was a lot more open space.

What to do when You Hit the Ball

After you hit your pitch in fair territory, drop the bat instead of tossing it and run as hard as you can to first base.

How Players Hone their Pitching Skills

Pitchers in the Major Leagues practice by throwing pitches to the bullpen catcher in the bullpen under the observance of the main pitching coach or the bullpen pitching coach. Starting pitchers who pitch every five games usually throw a bullpen session two or three days after their last start. Pitchers sometimes pitch to hitters during batting practice and spring training. The pitching coach is usually a former pitcher or catcher.

How to Throw a Pitch

To throw a slider, throw the ball with your middle finger curved downward on the top part with your other fingers gripping the ball pointing straight. To throw a splitter, or split-fingered pitch, grip the ball with your second and third fingers around the top part. To throw a forkball, grip the ball with your second and fourth fingers around the top part. To throw a knuckleball, grip the ball with all four fingers curved downward on the top part and flip your wrist as you throw the ball.

How Players Hone their Fielding Skills

Players work on their fielding skills by engaging in drills in which a coach or someone else tosses a ball up and hits it toward them. The coaches help the players learn how to move, dive and catch ground balls, pop-ups and fly balls.

Sacrifice Flies and the Infield Fly Rule

When the batter hits a fly ball or pop-up, each base runner has to stand on his base when the ball is caught or go back to the base and touch it after the catch is made before he can advance a base. This rule also applies when a pitch is popped up on the infield and it is called the Infield Fly Rule. If a base runner does not tag up during or after the catch, the opposing players can throw the ball back to his base and he will be called out. Once an opposing fielder catches or drops the ball, the base runners are free to leave the base and run. A sacrifice fly is a run scored by the third base runner on a fly ball that is caught.

What is a Ground Rule Double?

When the batter hits a ball that bounces over the outfield wall or fence, he has to stop at second base on an official double and each runner already on base advances two bases.

How an Intentional Walk Works

When the manager wants the other team’s batter to be walked without swinging the bat, he will hold up his four fingers to his catcher and his catcher will stand outside of the batter’s box to catch four balls.

Sideline Safety

In addition to batters wearing a helmet, the first base coach and the third base coach should wear one too to be protected from a speedy line drive coming toward his head. Additionally, the base coaches and the batter waiting on deck should always be prepared to duck an incoming line drive.

Making a Pitching Change and Handling the Lineup

How long a manager will stick with his starting pitcher will depend on how many pitches he has thrown, how he is pitching, who he is pitching to later in the game, etc. The manager makes decisions on which reliever to pitch at any given time based on match ups and how much he has pitched recently. The manager uses similar guidelines when writing a lineup for his team before the game and handling pinch hitting decisions during the game.

Defensive Alignment

The manager and coaches sometimes tell a player where to stand based on who is batting and where he usually hits the ball.

How to Slide

You should slide toward a base with your feet because you will risk suffering an injury if you slide with your hands.

How to Block the Plate

When a base runner runs to home plate standing up, the catcher should quickly apply the tag and step aside to avoid a collision.

What Happens when the Batter Arrives at First Base at the Same Time the Ball is Caught at First Base?

Any tie goes to the runner.

How to Catch a Pop-up

The fielder closest to a ball hit in the air should take charge and yell, “I’ve got it!”

What Can Get a Player Ejected?

A player is likely to be ejected automatically if he argues a balls-and-strikes call or balk call. A balk occurs when the pitcher makes a bad or deceitful move while someone is on base. When a balk is called, each base runner advances a base. If the home plate umpire thinks a batter was hit intentionally, he can eject both the pitcher and his manager.

Extra Information

A regular game is played nine innings. The home team always bats during the latter half of an inning and only bats in the ninth inning if it is losing or the game is tied. If the score is tied after the ninth inning is played, the teams go into extra innings and play until the game is won.

You have learned how baseball is played.

5’5″ super middleweight Laura “Lady Ram” Ramsey was born Laura Alysia Ramsey on November 13, 1969 in Lake Wales, Florida to Annie (a food service worker) and Henry Ramsey (a contractor).

She began her athletic career at age 6 in YMCA basketball and Little League softball. In 4th grade she began taking piano lessons. In the 5th grade she learned to play the flute-a-phone and learned how to ride a unicycle. By the 6th grade she graduated to playing clarinet and ukulele. Throughout middle and high school she was involved in many sports, including basketball, volleyball, softball, and track.

Laura’s father died in the summer of 1986 and after this loss she became pregnant at age 16.  Due to graduate from high school in spring of 1987 and set to attend college on a basketball scholarship, Laura felt as though her life was crumbling (according to her bio as sent to WBAN), but with her best efforts she tried to keep a positive attitude and push forward through life’s struggles. As trials and tribulations would test her, she became more agitated – holding all inside and forming an inner drive and desire like that of a ram, thus leading to being referred to as “Lady Ram”.

Laura attended college on volleyball, basketball, and softball scholarships and she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management. After college she became employed by Doyle Baseball, a company that offers baseball and softball instruction. One year later, she worked for Florida’s Natural, a world-renowned citrus company, until 1997. From 1994 to 1996, she was involved in women’s national power lifting and semi-pro baseball.

Laura began boxing training in 1996 at Winter Haven Police Athletic League with Jack Leonard and Tony Morgan. In 1997, taking a “leap of faith”, she accepted a draft offer to play professionally in the Women’s Professional Fastpitch league on the Charlotte, North Carolina based team.

At the beginning of her second year of professional softball, she sustained a career-ending injury that left a plate and four screws in her left hand.  Upon returning to Florida, she began working with Polk County School Board and became involved in coaching volleyball, basketball, and softball at various local high schools.

In 1999 she briefly worked for UPS. Five months later she accepted
employment at Avon Park Youth Academy, a residential facility for the Department of Juvenile Justice. As of June 2006, she is Administrative Dean (acting assistant principal), and is state certified in Physical Education and Middle School Integrated Curriculum.

In 2001, she formed Lake Wales Boxing Team to help neighborhood teens focus their attention on something constructive. With no sheltered place to train, they met at a nearby park where a heavy bag was hung and other boxing equipment was pulled from the trunk of Ramsey’s car. After entering the Lake Wales Christmas parade Lady Ram decided to become officially registered with United States Amateur Boxing, the governing body of Olympic amateur boxing.

In January 2002, she competed in her first amateur bout – in St. Petersburg, Florida against Alexandra Maloy. Although the bout was close, “Lady Ram” won a points decision. It was at this time that she decided to train harder and take boxing more seriously.

Her next amateur bout was not until 2003, a year in which she captured several regional and national level championships including State Champ and Regional Champ.  In the 165-lb division at the 2003 Boxing USA National Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Laura stopped Marissa Diaz of Lackawanna in the second round of their semifinal bout on July 11 and then won the division with an RSC-1 over Kimico Pugh of Camp Lejeune, NC on July 12. In the 165-lb division at the 2003 National Golden Gloves in Chicago, Illinois, Laura stopped Precious Hall of Hawaii by RSC-2 on August 7,  In the Women’s Open 165-lb division. At the 2003 National Labor Day Ringside Championships in Kansas City, Missouri she defeated Akondaye Fountain of Texas to win her division. She went on to compete in two international competitions – to the USA vs. Russia Women’s Dual Invitational (9-1-1) in September, losing to Natascha Ragosina of Kazhakstan, and to the 75-kg Senior Division of the 2003 Sweden Box Cup in Stockholm, Sweden on October 5, where she lost to Sweden’s own Anna Laurel.  Her combined record for the year 2003 was 9-2-1.

Approaching age 35, “Lady Ram” had to decide whether to remain as an amateur for a few more months or to turn professional. On the advice of former world champion boxer and kickboxer Bonnie Canino, Laura decided to turn pro.

She made her pro debut on February 28, 2004 at the Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek, Florida.  Laura (158 lbs) won a four-round unanimous decision (40-36 x 3) over Jennifer Mancil (160 lbs) of Clewiston, Florida, who fell to 1-3 (0 KO’s) with the loss.

Laura was idle for the next year due to becoming a grandmother and starting a fitness center … Lady Ram’ s Self-Enhancement Center.

Her second pro bout was on April 9, 2005 at Number One Shed in Hamilton, Bermuda, on a pro-am card against southpaw Teresa Perrozzi of Bermuda. Laura won a four-round unanimous decision and Perozzi fell to 2-2 with the loss.

Laura then traveled to Georgetown, Guyana, in July 2005 with co-promoter, “A Ring of Their Own” expecting to fight ranked Sharon Ward. But due to mysterious last minute changes by the Guyanese promoter, Laura instead fought Pamela London’s sister and pro debuter Pauline London, winning by a second-round TKO.

On August 19, 2005 at the Argosy Casino in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Laura (165 lbs) stepped into the ring with Yolanda Swindell of Houston, Texas and won a four-round split (40-36,39-37, 37-39) decision, dropping Swindell to 3-3-1 (2 KOs).

All-female card promoter “A Ring of Their Own” then invited Laura (165 lbs) to fight “their” undefeated Asa Sandell(164 lbs)of Sweden on October 8, 2005 at Harrah’s in Laughlin, Nevada.  Lady Ram again returned home undefeated (at 5-0) with a split (58-55,57-56,56-57) decision, dropping Sandell to 3-1-1

In November 2005,  “A Ring of Their Own” invited her to fight Shelley Burton of Kalispell, Montana for the  WIBA World Middleweight title at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Laura took the fight at 72 hours’ notice, as a late replacement for Leatitia Robinson of Chicago.  After celebrating her 36th birthday two days before and with minimal bag work and no endurance training Laura (163 lbs) lost her first professional fight by a ten-round majority (97-93,97-93,95-95) decision to Burton (157½ lbs) who improved to 7-2-0. The bout was action-filled as Ramsey threw more power punches but Burton boxed and handed a tiring Ramsey her first loss as a pro, dropping her record to 5-1. (For more of Mary Ann Owen’s photos of this fight and card

A fourth offer came from “A Ring of Their Own” to fight  Erin Toughill (5’10″, 164 lbs) of at the Palladium in Hollywood, California on January 27, 2006. For the first time in her professional career, Lady Ram came to this fight at 167 lbs feeling complete with a trainer of 6 weeks. Although feeling prepared, she left with her second loss in two months – by a 59-55,59-55,58-56 unanimous decision, dropping her record to 5-2.  Toughill improved to 7-2-1 (0 KOs) with the win.

PostHeaderIcon Make a Sleeveless Shirt From an Unused T-Shirt

Sleeveless T-shirts have been, and will continue to be popular choices for men’s summer wear. Here I will detail how you can turn a regular T-shirt into a sleeveless T-shirt

There are two ways to cut a men’s T-shirt; either leave the seam on the shirt or just cut the seam off with the sleeve. If you leave the seam on the shirt, it will make the shirt stronger and less likely to rip down from the armholes. It also makes the shirt look neater and if you do it right, it’s hard to tell the shirt apart from the sleeveless T-shirts from the store. See Homemade DIY Sleeveless shirt craft slideshow guide (seam remain, neat, strong variant) for adetailed, step by step slideshow.

Cutting the seam off allows for the shirt to be more comfortable. It also gives it a more ragged look. This would be the preferred method if the lounge feel were desired. The liability is that the shirt is more prone to rip. It also would cause the armholes to be deeper which can be a problem with baggy shirts.

Spread the shirt out and make a small hole in the sleeve about an eighth of an inch from the seam, with a pair of scissors. Insert one blade of the scissors into the hole and cut around the sleeve, cutting through only one side at a time. The cut should be right next to the seam. If the seam is to be left on the shirt, it is important to cut between an eighth of an inch and a quarter of an inch from the seam. To cut too close causes the seam to come apart with time, and to leave too much sleeve causes not only a ragged look but also the remainder of the sleeve to curl outwards. If the seam is not being kept, distance is not as important.

A funny thing about T-shirts is that the sleeve always wants to curl outwards, but the shoulder always curls over inwards. It is that exact curling that with time, works to make the T-shirt look neater yet still comfortable. To hasten the curling, gently tug on the cloth like you were trying to pull the armhole wider and it will curl over.

Long Sleeved T-shirts are also good for cutting to sleeveless shirts. Because the only difference is the length of the sleeve, the shirt will look the same once it is cut. Set aside the sleeves for future crafts or uses.

There are a number of different crafts and uses for T-shirt sleeves. The sleeve can be made into a hat or a headband, for example. They can be worn under a baseball cap for the ghetto look. Or if the shirt is a certain color cloth that is needed for a specific craft, the sleeves can be cut off so you still have a shirt while also having the cloth needed for the project.

Long sleeved T-shirt sleeves are more desirable for crafts. Not only do they make good nightcaps, but also they can be made into a handbag. Sew up the cut end and then make two holes on the inside of the cuff on either side of the seam. These holes go only through one half of the cuff. Insert a string which then serves as not only a handle but pulls the bag closed. My favorite craft is to sew a ball into the sleeve. To do so, I sew the cuff shut, then put the ball into the sleeve. On the other side of the ball, I use a rubber band, which I twist until tight. This holds the ball in place without having to sew it, allowing me to replace or remove the ball as desired. Now I have a “comet” ready to launch with the swing of a bat.

PostHeaderIcon Daily Fantasy Baseball: Player Projections

Article by Shane Sapno

Player projections can be found on fantasy sports websites. You can develop your own mathematical models, or you may just intuitively understand player projections from your high level of daily fantasy baseball knowledge. No matter how you do it, this is where to start. I like to use a player’s average fantasy points per game as a base, and try to determine all of the factors in today’s game that would cause them to tend to score higher or lower than their season average score. Factors to consider are listed below.

Fantasy Hitters

Opponent’s starting pitcher’s strength – You want your hitter against a poor pitcher and not an ace.Opponent team’s relief pitching – The starter will not likely complete the whole game, so you will probably get a few innings with relievers. Are your opponent’s relievers better or worse than average?Opponent starting pitcher’s throwing hand – How does your hitter do against left and right handed pitchers? Are they going to do better or worse than average based on the opposing starter?Home or away games – Is the game at home or away? Does the hitter perform better at home or away? Also keep in mind that home batters may get fewer at bats at home vs. away, as the home team may not play the bottom of the ninth.Heat factor – How has your hitter been playing lately? Baseball players are pretty streaky. Hot players tend to stay hot and cold players tend to stay cold in the short-term. Try to select players that have been playing very well lately.

Fantasy Pitchers

Opponent hitter strength – Which teams are easiest for daily fantasy baseball pitchers to score highly against and are more likely to get the win against, and which teams tend to shell starting pitchers and chase them out of games? Give your pitcher a good match-up and he will score higher than normal over the long-term.Opposing pitcher strength – Are you pitching against an ace or a scrub? This matters if you want to get the win because of its high fantasy score. A good pitcher will still likely lose if they are up against a better pitcher. So not only do you want a good pitcher, you want to make sure that the opposing pitcher is bad.Home or away game – How does your pitcher do at home vs. away? Some ballparks work very well with starting pitchers and others do not. Also, pitchers in general tend to score higher at home because home teams are more likely to get the win. What are the odds? – I always like to check an online sportsbook to see who the highest favored teams are that day to win. The highest favored teams are the most likely to get the win according to the public’s consensus. A highly favored starting pitcher is simply more likely to win than they are to lose. It is good, if not required, that the pitcher you select is also on a highly favored team that day.

PostHeaderIcon Baseball Gear Batting Gloves Provide Better Grip

The importance of wearing the right gear in all field sports whether it is baseball, softball or football cannot be overstated. The right pants, helmet and batting gloves all contribute towards helping the player perform well. The batting glove covers one or both hands of a batter. Batting gloves are used in both baseball and softball, though softball batting gloves are larger than batting gloves baseball. Batting gloves baseball protects the hands of the player from painful blisters and rough calluses that are caused from hours of swinging the bat at practice. They are essential in providing comfort and keeping the player\’s hands warm especially in cold weather. Batting gloves baseball improves the player\’s grip on the bat. It reduces the shock that bat to ball impact creates. If the players\’ slide while running bases, the baseball batting gloves provide protection. Softball batting gloves are of different styles depending on the players\’ position. For example, catchers\’ mitts are heavily padded while basemen\’s mitts are rounded for easier scooping.

Most batting gloves used at professional level are made of embossed leather. They are designed to fit the contours of the player\’s hands. Some of them come with pre-curved fingers and ventilated mesh to keep the palms free from sweat. Velcro wrist straps help to keep the gloves in place.

Batting gloves are best bought at your local sports store rather than on line. They should always be tried on before buying so that your hands can get used to the feel. To determine the size you need, first measure your dominant hand from the base of the hand to the top the middle finger. The store clerk can help you with this. Some sporting stores have cardboard models of glove sizes that you can compare your hand against. Try on a few gloves of appropriate sizes and each time you try a glove, take a few practice swings with a baseball bat to get an idea of how it will feel during the game. Buy the one that feels most comfortable while swinging the bat. Hold a softball in softball batting gloves to check for comfort. The glove should be snug but not tight. There should not be any extra space between your fingers and the glove or your palms and the glove. The batting glove should allow your hand to breathe at the same time offer protection and a good grip. Double layered batting gloves are considered a good option as they are smaller and tighter and provide extra comfort and grip.

Though batting gloves are optional, they are extremely popular both among major league and minor league players. Even little league, high school and college players use them. Batting gloves can be found in a wide range of prices but a serious player must consider investing in a good quality pair from reputed brands such as Rawlings, Nokona and Wilson. High end batting gloves when broken in and taken care of properly can last many years and help a player play better.

PostHeaderIcon Sports Themed Wall Stickers Decorating Ideas

Sports themes provide versatile decor opportunities and allow you to add elements that can be replaced as your child’s tastes change. As you decorate a bedroom, consider the space you have available, the type of sports that will be represented, and the atmosphere you want to create.

Memorabilia

For a sophisticated theme, use antique memorabilia to create an atmosphere that celebrates the glory days of sport. Hunt for old baseball bats and gloves, autographed balls, old baseball cards, bobble heads, or team flags. If your child is interested in a particular team or university, look for vintage pieces from its sports teams in days past: jerseys, posters, trophies, and commemorative balls can all make a big impact in a sports bedroom.

Wall Mural

A wall mural adds a dramatic splash in a child’s bedroom and easily can be painted over as his or her tastes change. The view of a stadium from first base, the edge of a hockey rink, or a football goal post are some ideas. If you do not have artistic talent, use a projector to cast an image on the wall; trace over it with pencil and fill in with paint. Enlist your child’s help in the project to give it a personal touch.

Hanging Equipment

One of the easiest ways to decorate a sports-themed bedroom is to use sporting equipment. If your child is interested in hockey, create wall decor from inexpensive hockey sticks from a sporting goods store or thrift store. Make racks to display baseball bats on the wall or hang basketballs from the ceiling in the corner. Hang a small basketball hoop on a wall away from the window, and provide small fabric basketballs for bedroom pick-up games.

Framed Jerseys

If your child plays a sport or is a fan of a specific team, use framed jerseys as decor. You can buy college and professional team jerseys at specialty sports stores or from the schools or teams; if your child is in high school, you might use a jersey from his little league team. Choose a deep frame with extra space between the glass and the mat, fold the jersey so the neckline and number are visible and insert it into the frame. Smooth out any wrinkles before securing the back.

Wall Decals

For children whose tastes switch rapidly, wall decals are a quick and easy way to add dramatic touches. The decals, which are made of vinyl or plastic with an adhesive back, can be removed and repositioned without harming the walls. Look for decals that reflect your child’s favorite sport; for baseball, you might put up baseballs, bats, a home plate, and a life-size decal of his favorite player.
