PostHeaderIcon Fantasy Baseball – Player Profile – Nick Markakis

Nick Markakis is playing in his fourth MLB season and has classified himself as being an elite option in the outfield for fantasy owners.

Markakis has had a very solid past 2 years with balanced numbers across the board. In 2007, he scored 97 runs and drove in 112 runs. Put this together with 23 homeruns, 18 steals and a .300 average, and you have not just a solid option but a super star in your ranks.

Markakis found his numbers dip slightly in 2008, with 20 home runs, 87 RBI, and 10 stolen bases, but saw a rise in the number of runs he personally scored with 106.

Expectations were extremely high for Markakis entering 2009, with many hoping he could swing for more power this season and approach the 30 home run mark in addition with a 100 run – 100 RBI line.

Markakis will run less and his power numbers should see a boost, though it a 30 HR year in 2009 may be a tad wishful thinking at this point.

Through 45 games in 2009, he has 7, which is slightly under a 30 home run pace. However, his homeruns aside, Markakis is an excellent hitter and should hit for an average around .300 consistently. This combined with the large run and RBI totals make him an excellent outfielder.

As for later down the road, Markakis seems destined to improve upon his already spectacular numbers and expectations. He someday soon could be a 30 HR, 100 RBI guy that can also run the bases well. I expect we someday soon will see some hof his doubles turn into home runs. Put simply, players like Nick Markakis are hard to find.

PostHeaderIcon Baseball Player Profiles: Ted Simmons

Baseball catcher Ted Simmons made it to the big leagues at the tender age of 18 and despite early troubles eventually overcame adversity and went on to have a marvelous 21 year career. Unfortunately for Simmons, he played in an era ripe with outstanding catchers such as Johnny Bench, Gary Carter and Carlton Fisk, and in large part the ability of Ted Simmons was  overlooked. Although his career has garnered no real attention from the Baseball Hall of Fame, the career statistics and accomplishments of Simmons matches or exceeds the aforementioned players in many categories and he is without question one of the greatest catchers of all-time.

Born on August 9, 1949 in Highland Park, Michigan, Ted Simmons was selected with the 10th selection of the 1st round of the 1967 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Following a brief stint in the minor leagues Simmons made his big league debut in 1968 and struggled to adjust to major league pitching over the next three seasons as a part time player. In 1971 Ted Simmons had a breakout season, finishing with seven home runs, 77 runs batted in and a .304 batting average. His best season came statistically in 1975 when he had 18 home runs with 100 runs batted in to go along with a .332 batting average.

Simmons played with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1968 to 1980, with the Milwaukee Brewers from 1981 to 1985 and with the Atlanta Braves from 1986 to 1988. While he never won a batting or home run title, Simmons was consistently among the best players in the game every season and was named to 8 all-star teams and won one Silver Slugger Award. In his career Simmons hit for a batting average of over .300 seven times, had six seasons of over 20 home runs and ten times had 80 or more runs batted in. His career totals – 2,472 hits, 483 doubles, 248 home runs, 1,389 runs batted in and a .285 average are near the top in every category for catchers.

Following his retirement, Ted Simmons has served as an MLB coach, scout, director of player development and was briefly the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates but had to resign due to health issues. Hopefully, the Hall of Fame will recognize the contributions of Ted Simmons to the game of baseball and reward him with enshrinement, but at this point in time it is doubtful.

PostHeaderIcon St. Louis Cardinals Team?s Die-Hard Fans Power Baseball Merchandise Sales at Online Store

The success enjoyed by the St. Louis Cardinals no doubt has fuelled the upsurge in St. Louis Cardinals merchandise and memorabilia. Even Cardinals Jersey sales are up significantly.

The first decade of the new millennium seems to be one that is destined to be a memorable one for the St. Louise Cardinals. After a not so insignificant absence in the winners’ column in Major League baseball, the Cards, led by Albert Pujols, has won the National League Central division in six of seven years. They even recorded 105 wins in one season (in 2004) for the best record in baseball, and that year defeated the Dodgers in the NLDS and the Houston Astros in a seven game NLCS to book their ticket to the 2004 World Series, where they were sadly swept by the eventual champs, the Boston Red Sox.

The Cardinals continued their winning ways in the regular season the following year, winning 100 games and another Central Division title, but lost to the Astros in the NLCS.

Finally, the breakthrough came when they moved to the new Busch Stadium in 2006. The Cardinals defeated the San Diego Padres in the NLDS, the New York Mets in a seven game series in the NLCS, and won the 2006 World Series, against the Detroit Tigers. That World Series win was the franchise’s tenth World Series title.

St. Louis Cardinals Team History

The St. Louis Cardinals, also referred to as the ‘Cards’ and ‘Redbirds’ are one of the most successful franchises in league history. The team holds the National League record for most World Series wins at 10 total World Series championships. That total is second only to the New York Yankees with 26. The franchise was founded in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings, making it the oldest current professional sports franchise west of the Mississippi. They joined the National League in 1892 and took the moniker “Cardinals” in 1900. Before moving to the “New” Busch Stadium, the Cards were only one of the few remaining teams that played in a non-modern baseball venue. That changed in 2006 when the moved to the “New Busch Stadium.” That was on hindsight a great year as it was only the second time that a team moved into a new stadium and then won the World Series that same year.

Their winning tradition is why the team has such a loyal and avid fan base, which primarily accounts for the upsurge in Cards merchandise sales any time they have a great season. And since they are having by all accounts a great decade, the team has consistently been selling team merchandise at a high rate.

St. Louis Cardinals Memorabilia

One of the consistent best sellers amongst all MLB merchandise is the St. Louis Cardinals Gifts. With so many great moments this past decade, and so many notable players, it is but natural for the market to respond, making Cardinals memorabilia a hot category for fans and especially avid collectors.

Among the best selling items include an Albert Pujols’ 2008 N.L. MVP 24KT Gold & Infield Dirt Coin Photo Mint. Having this limited edition framed item mounted on your wall will surely make any Redbird fan green with envy. There are also limited edition coin mints, for those interested in collecting special edition coins. One notable example would be the Cardinals 24kt Gold & Infield Dirt 3 Coin Set. This set of three rare and valuable coins is valuable now, but wait about a decade or so and it will probably double if not triple in value. One of the most popular in the memorabilia section is the St. Louis Cardinals 10 Time World Series Champions Photo Mint – an item that celebrates the team’s greatest achievement of putting together 10 World Series championships throughout the length of their history. For something of more recent vintage, there’s the St. Louis Cardinals 2006 World Series Champs Mega Mint with Three 24kt Gold Coins.

What makes these memorabilia items a major draw is the fact that they not only look good on display, they appreciate in value and are thus investments rather than just simple trinkets as other merchandise are.

St. Louis Cardinals Jerseys

And of course, when a team makes a deep push into the playoffs, it’s the players who really do all the work. Fans show their appreciation for the players by wearing replica jerseys of the favorite players. Due to their run of great seasons this decade, the jerseys of the St. Louis Cardinals sell like hotcakes.

They are so popular in fact that the team even has St. Louis Cardinals Infant Replica Jerseys for sale. Proud parents just can’t wait for their kids to grow to share their love for the team so they condition the kid’s minds at an early age. It’s not uncommon to see a baby sporting an Albert Pujols Toddler Replica Jersey at the stadium during game days. Another jersey that is popular with the fans is the St. Louis Cardinals Cooperstown Throwback Replica Jersey. Throwbacks are gaining in popularity – a nod by the current generation to the heroes of the past, and an indication that the sport is being appreciated in its entirety and not just in the moment.

Other jerseys available include Youth Replica Jerseys, Kids Replica Jersey, Road Grey Replica Jerseys, an even St. Louis Cardinals Personalized Replica Jersey with your name on it!

PostHeaderIcon Organize all of Your Equipment with the Perfect Baseball Gear Bag

Article by Darren Pace

A baseball gear bag has many different uses and can be used to carry all of your equipment and accessories. Like any other sports, there are different items that will be needed for both practice and games. Choosing the right equipment bags for the player’s needs may be a daunting task. However, if careful consideration is done the ideal baseball gear bag can be chosen to suit the overall needs and budget.

Whether the baseball bag is for the player, trainer, coach or parents it will need to carry a huge amount of items. No matter what league of baseball is played, there are pieces of equipment and clothing that are standard. Mitts, balls, bats and uniforms will all need to be transported with ease. Placing them in the baseball gear bag will ensure that they are kept clean and accessible whenever they are needed.

Sporting equipment can be costly and keeping it all secure in one place will ensure that it is neat, secure and undamaged. The baseball gear bag will be unique to the owner, and often this is how it is distinguished from other ones. The equipment bags are available in many different colors, style and sizes. Which one is chosen will be down to personal choice and budget and if possible the larger the gear bag the better.

The color of the baseball gear bag can be bought to match the team colors and accessorized for the player. There are differences between the coach equipment bags and the player bags; however, universal ones can be bought. Although the baseball bag, should look stylish it does need to be functional as well. It should be the correct size and shape to hold all of the equipment comfortably, and not be bulging to capacity.

If the equipment bags are quite large, having the wheeled ones may be preferred for ease of transport. The baseball gear bag can get quite heavy, and no one wants to get injured carrying the bags to the training ground. If the carrying style is preferred, the straps should be wide and supportive on the carrier’s shoulders. No matter what style of equipment bags are chosen, they will need to be durable and made from heavy duty material.

A duffle style bag is great as they often have different compartments to keep the different pieces of equipment separate. This is great at the end of the game when items will be dirty, and will avoid getting the whole of the baseball gear bag filthy. Smaller zipped areas along the side are great for smaller items. Mitts, gloves and cleats can easily be stored in these areas ensuring that everyone knows where items are.

There are several different materials to choose from for the baseball gear bag, and often the decision is down to personal choice. Some players prefer the look of leather, and others prefer flexible plastic for the durability. No matter what equipment bags are chosen they will ensure that all of the baseball gear is stored within easy reach, making everyone’s life easier.

PostHeaderIcon The Kettlebell and the Baseball Player’s Fitness!

This article is for all of my baseball players who believe in a well structured strength and conditioning program. This is for all of you baseball players that are young and those of you who are veterans to the game. Kettlebells are a hell of a way for you to achieve a level of both optimal strength and conditioning within the scope of your overall preparation for the game you so love to play.

How much emphasis do you put on training your athleticism? Are you only worried about batting cage time and field time? How much of the skill of your game, as far as, hitting, throwing, and catching the ball can you improve on, really? If you think about these questions logically you know that everyone has a ceiling and that the only baseball players who truly succeed in these skills are those that can do them longer and more consistently.

Kettlebell training offers a solution for you in terms of achieving this long term consistency that I am talking about.

Lets be honest here, spending 9 hours a day in the batting cage is not going to make you that much better of a hitter. However, if you have the core strength, shoulder stability, and hip power of an optimally conditioned athlete then you can improve your total performance in everyone of those specific baseball skills that I mentioned. Training with kettlebells allows you to cover an array of physical categories consisting of strength, power, flexibility, and resiliency to just name a few.

Developing that core power from training with the iron bell may not improve your batting average by hitting more balls, but it may improve your homerun category because the balls you hit will be hit much harder due to an increase in your strength. The speed you gain from kettlebell training may actually improve your batting average because that bunt or infield grounder you laid down might normally result in you being thrown out, but maybe not this time with the proven speed results one can achieve through kettlebell training!

Kettlebell training for baseball players should be mandatory. This is the perfect tool to fit the mold of a baseball player. Look, I am a strength and conditioning specialist and I know from years of experience what it takes to get athletes into top-notch shape. I’m not telling you to just forget about the batting cage or taking those infield grounders, but I am saying that most of your off-season and pre-season time can easily be wasted there. You will hold onto and improve those basic skills, but with a sound kettlebell strength program you will amplify those skills much quicker! Train hard and enjoy my friends.

PostHeaderIcon Baseball Player Profiles: George Brett

George Brett was among the most fierce competitors every to play major league baseball – his desire to win often times was the deciding factor in victory for his beloved Kansas City Royals, and the local community loved him for it. Chosen by Kansas City in the second round of the 1971 draft, Brett excelled for the next 20 years and is widely considered one of the greatest third basemen of all time. As a young player Brett struggled as many do with big league pitching, until hitting coach Charlie Lau helped to teach him how to protect the plate and correct “holes” in his swing that were being exploited by pitchers. The result was that George Brett went from a weak – hitting rookie to a perennial all-star and one of the most feared batters in the game.

George Brett was born on May 15, 1953 in Glen Dale, West Virginia, the youngest of four brothers. Remarkably, all four brothers grew up to play minor league baseball, with older brother Ken Brett having a fair amount of success as a big league pitcher. At the age of 19, Ken Brett pitched in the World Series, one of the youngest players to have done so and in the process became an inspiration for younger brother George.

Although not flashy, George Brett was a consistent and aggressive player, and made the most of his ability every time he played in a baseball game. Although recognized for his hitting skill, Brett was a better than average fielder, but only won one Gold Glove Award – in 1985.

George Brett won the American League Batting Title three times, and led the league in hits and triples three times also in his career. He was named the 1980 American League Most Valuable Player, the 1985 American League Championship Series MVP, and helped the Kansas City Royals to the World Series Championship in 1985.

In his career Brett finished with 3,154 hits, 317 home runs, and 1,595 runs batted in. George Brett is one of only four players in the history of baseball to accumulate 3,000 hits 300 home runs and finish with a .300 average – the others are Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Stan Musial. The Kansas City Royals retired Brett’s number 5 jersey in 1997, as a tribute to his contributions not only on the field, but in the community as well. In his first year of eligibility in 1999, George Brett was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with a 98.2 approval rating, one of the highest ever.

Since retiring, George Brett has stayed active in baseball by becoming an owner of several minor league baseball teams, and serving as a special instructor on occasion.
