Playing Baseball

Baseball is a game of skill and for that reason the best athlete is not always the best player. Baseball involves thrilling, pitching, catching, baserunning, fielding, and hitting. If you want to improve in all of these areas and skills then you must practice regularly using drills. Practicing must be fast and include jumping from one drill to the other. A good baseball player must always focus on making the most out of every drill session instead of just going through the motions which can often lead to bad habits. If you want to improve your baseball game focus on top form in as many drill opportunities as you can. Here’s some information to help you while work on improving your baseball game.

Throwing the ball

You should grab the baseball with your index finger and middle finger along the long seams of the baseball while keeping your thumb underneath it to provide support. When you throw be sure to square your shoulders with your target and while moving towards the target throw with a 3/4 arm action.

Fielding the Ball

If you keep your feet spread and stay down you’ll ensure good balance. You do not want the ball to go between your legs and you always want your glove in front of you so you can block the ball and see it go into your glove.

Catching Fly Balls

If you’re out in the outfield you’ll want to be striding towards your target and you’ll want to be behind the ball. You need to be able to see the ball and you need to be able to quickly get your stride to throw to your target. Finally, be sure to catch the ball above the shoulder with your elbow bent. This will help cushion when catching.

Batting Stance

When batting your stance should consist of your feet shoulder length apart with your toes pointed inward slightly. This stance will help you keep your balance. Be sure to look at the pitcher with your head level.

Base Running

Always run in a way to give yourself the best chance for top speed. For example, if you plan on running more than one base try to time your steps so you hit the base with your right foot as you get less arc and stay consistently striding without losing speed towards the next base.

Pitching

Good pitchers focus on making consistent strikes with proper mechanics. Proper mechanics will reduce the chances of an injury. If you vary the speed of your pitch the batters will remain confused and their timing will be off.

These tips for improving your baseball are just beginning. It is important that you practice on all of these skills if you want to become a well-rounded baseball player.

The Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball are one of the most storied franchises in the history of baseball in America. The franchise has been a part of baseball in America for over a century and has gone from dominant to loveable losers and returned to dominance during their hundred-year existence. Boston has some of the most passionate fans in the game and they are a group that has endured the heights of ecstasy as well as the deepest depths of despair.

Boston’s history begins in 1901 when the minor league baseball group known as the Western League decided to declare itself equal with the National League, the only major league baseball association at the time. The newly formed American League decided to place a franchise in Boston to compete with the city’s National League team. That new franchise would be the Boston Red Sox, though they had no official nickname until 1908. The new Boston franchise would finish second in 1901 and third in 1902 before winning their first pennant in 1903 and repeating in 1904. Boston began to build its legacy almost immediately by appearing in the first modern World Series in 1903 and defeating the heavily favored Pittsburgh Pirates from the National League five games to three in a best of nine series. Before the first two decades of the 20th century ended, the new Red Sox would win a total of five World Series titles, winning again in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918 in addition to their 1903 title.

Boston’s good times would soon come to an end however, marked notably in history by the sale of Babe Ruth to the franchise’s heated rival, the New York Yankees. Financial stresses lead to the sale of Ruth to the Yankees, and in the minds of many contributed to the rise of the Yankees and the troubles of the Red Sox during the 1920s and 1930s. After winning four World Series titles and four American League pennants with Ruth the Red Sox would have to wait until 1946 to win another AL pennant and would wait 86 agonizing years to win another World Series title which occurred in 2004. During the 86-year span between World Series titles, Boston fans would have to endure losing seasons and agonizing close calls that would see their beloved “Sawx” lose all four World Series berths during their title drought.

When the club emerged in 2004 as World Series title, it capped a return to prominence for the franchise that saw it win another World Series title in 2007 and become a perennial contender to win the title. Since 2004 the Red Sox have made five post-season appearances, as the Wild Card team in 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009 and as the AL East champions in 2007. The franchise has also seen its fan base increase worldwide during its resurgence in the 2000s. Boston fans are now so numerous in states across the country and around the world that they are simply referred to as “The Nation”.

The franchise has played in the same stadium since 1912, Fenway Park. When the club was formed as an original member of the American League they played their home games at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds. The Red Sox played there from 1901 until 1911 before moving into Fenway Park for the 1912 season. Fenway has stood the test of time and is now not only the oldest venue in baseball but is also the oldest venue in American professional sports. The franchise has sold out every home game at Fenway Park since May 15, 2003.

Some of the most valuable autographed baseball cards are those which are signed by those players who rarely give their signature away. But it’s not just baseball players whose autograph is coveted by collectors, as managers Terry Francona and Joe Torre are two mangers whose signature collectors often purchase or trade for.

As far as baseball cards go, the New York Yankees are often at the top of collector’s lists and historically, Yogi Berra autographed baseball cards have been a collector favorite like none other. Much of this is due to the fact that Yogi remains active today by appearing in commercials and has a minor league stadium named after him. Of course, his 3 MVP awards, 15 American League All-Star appearances and 10 World Series championships help to drive up the price of his autographed baseball cards.

Many of the most popular autographed baseball cards in the last few years have come from the Boston Red Sox.

There’s nothing like a World Series or two to spark interest in player cards and signatures, and with the Red Sox having won twice during the first 6 years of the 21st century, collectors and fans alike have taken keen interest in previously unknown players such as Tim Wakefield, Mark Bellhorn and Orlando Cabrera. These players’ card values have skyrocketed in the last few years due to the fact that they only had a few autographs on the market once they started winning.

Perhaps more than any other retired baseball player, Yogi maintains frequent public appearances and makes an effort to sign as many autographs as possible. Normally a high amount of signatures on cards would drive down market prices, but Yogi’s great popularity amongst both collectors and the general public help to keep the cards in demand and the prices higher than most.

Signed baseball cards have continued to stand the test of time, and with his 19 All-Star appearances as a shortstop firmly in the record books, the popularity and prices of his cards are going nowhere but up. It helps to be regarded as one of the greatest shortstops ever to play the game, but it is Cal Ripken’s actual signature that makes his autographed baseball cards so enticing to collectors. Ripken’s penmanship on his cards and memorabilia has always been crisp and clean, and has stayed so throughout the years despite the numerous requests placed upon him. This clarity in penmanship has collectors and fans constantly looking for Ripken autographed items.

The value of any card with a signature on it will of course vary, but it comes down to mainly the player, team, design and scarcity. Most of the time, cards with multiple signatures will outweigh the value of any one signature on a card, but of course the players need to be desirable for this to hold true.

It is no longer a wonder why most baseball fans are keen on collecting Derek Jeter baseball cards as the value of these are attributed to one of the best players in the present major league baseball of America. True enough, Derek Jeter is one of the most popular baseball players in the green diamond and has been compared to other great baseball players of the past.

However, such immense popularity has also made it difficult in terms of obtaining Jeter baseball cards, most especially the earliest ones when he was still a rookie, or the ones which he have signed. Others bear the several hours waiting in the ballpark during batting practice just to have a card signed or know when Derek Jeter might hole a private autograph signing.

Obtaining Jeter baseball cards is a matter that one should also carefully think about since the price could come to be a bit pricey. Such cards are usually worth the player in display and also the age with which it has survived.

Though marquee players like Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera and Josh Hamilton have deservedly received a majority of the attention this season, some other players have put together very nice seasons under the radar. Here’s a look at the top hitters (as of Sept. 23) in the league that have put up some big stats without getting a lot of publicity for it.

Paul Konerko, First Base, Chicago White Sox:
Part of the reason the White Sox have been able to compete all season long has been the steady production of Konerko. As of Sept. 23, Konerko had a .313 average, 37 round-trippers and 105 RBIs, placing him among the leaders in all three categories. Most people have been talking about Cabrera and Hamilton but Konerko would have been in the MVP discussion had the White Sox been able to keep it together down the stretch.

Mark Teixeira, First Base, New York Yankees:
Apparently it’s just going to be a yearly thing for Teixeira to get off to a slow start. Even with another atrocious April, Teixeira’s production has still been there and he’s once again a force in the middle of the Yankees’ lineup. With 30 homers and 100 RBIs once again, Teixeira is still a premier power hitter and his average of .254 isn’t that bad considering his OPS is still a solid .840 for the season. Though it’s actually a sub-par season for Teixeira, fantasy owners were glad to have him once he got rolling.

Aubrey Huff, First Base, San Francisco Giants:
Huff has been the main pop in the Giants’ lineup, even though his name isn’t the type that usually sells MLB tickets by the handful. Still, it’s hard to argue with his production. In a lineup desperate for power, Huff has stepped up by smacking 25 bombs and driving in 84 runs – a fairly impressive number for a notorious pitcher’s ballpark.

Adrian Beltre, Third Base, Boston Red Sox:
Just don’t mess with Beltre in a contract season. On a one-year deal, Beltre was arguably the best player on the Red Sox’s roster and he’s been the most consistent hitter all season long. With roughly 10 games to play, Beltre had a .324 average, 28 long balls and 99 RBIs. If the Red Sox didn’t get that type of production from him, they may not even have finished in third place in the American League East.

Ichiro Suzuki, Outfield, Seattle Mariners:
It hasn’t been one of Ichiro’s best seasons, but he’s still well above .300 for an average and just recently cracked 40 stolen bases for the fourth time in his career. Seattle clearly needs to get Ichiro some pop in the lineup behind him, but he’s still getting on base and getting in position to score.

Juan Pierre, Outfield, Chicago White Sox:
Outside of Konerko, one of the other bright spots on the White Sox roster this year has been Juan Pierre. Pierre is leading the league with 60 stolen bases and is hitting better than he had in previous years. Any time you have a guy at the top of your lineup stealing 60 bases, you should be in a position to win a few games.

Shin-Soo Choo, Outfield, Cleveland Indians:
Choo has quietly put together a nice season on a team that has been out of it from the get-go. With 20 bombs, 20 steals and 82 RBIs in a lackluster lineup, Choo is a guy that definitely gave fantasy owners plenty of value all season long.

David Wright, Third Base, New York Mets:
It’s hard to get excited about a guy who plays in New York and doesn’t wear pinstripes, but Wright has done all he can to help his team win. Criticized for losing his power stroke after a weak season in 2009 from a power standpoint, Wright responded with 25 homers and 95 RBIs with more than a week to go in the regular season. Wright has also added in 19 stolen bases, making him a very solid fantasy producer in 2010.

It is just a week’s time since the commencement of the second half of the season for the Philadelphia Phillies who play in the famous ball park of Citizens Bank Park. Just as players who are warming up for the game, even the spectators are also warming up to see this most exciting series. Teams from all parts of America are taking part in this tournament. Prominent amongst them is the team from Philadelphia and San Francisco. As everyone knows, Philadelphia could not make it to the world cup. In fact since the last three years they are unable to win the series and so they could not qualify for world cup. But, this year things are different. Phillies have taken stock of the situation and they have now fielded some of their best players. All eyes are on Roy Halladay and other players and spectators are certain that these ace players will have a feast of action from these players.

But, Phllies will have stiff resistance from San Francisco. Some experts of Baseball are of the opinion that this series is going to be fully of actions, particularly between Phillies and San Francisco.

Here are ten MVP items from the vaunted “Sultan of Swat” spanning various collectible categories. Warning: they are expensive, with some artifacts valued at nearly one million dollars.

1. Babe Ruth 1914 Baltimore News Rookie Card

The Bambino’s so-called “rookie card” comes from the 1914 set issued by the Baltimore News showcasing players from the Baltimore Terrapins and the Baltimore Orioles. Produced in both red-and-white and blue-and-white versions, the card’s back features a schedule for home/away games and the legend “Compliments of Baltimore International League.”

One graded blue-and-white example in PSA 2 good condition sold at Robert Edward Auctions for 9,750. For those who can’t afford the original, a blank back reprint card was produced in 1993.

2. Babe Ruth 1926-29 Game-Used Bat

The Babe swung a mean bat, particularly during his heyday of the 1920s. An authentic game-used Babe Ruth Louisville Slugger from the 1926-29 era – one into which the Bambino carved 11 notches signifying 11 home runs – fetched 5,628 at Grey Flannel Auctions.

3. Babe Ruth Called-Shot Baseball Jersey

As the legend goes (backed somewhat by a grainy film), the Babe reportedly pointed to the center-field bleachers at Wrigley Field during the 1932 World Series, indicating that he would deliver the next pitch there. Ruth did just that, slugging a home run and spawning one of the most debated moments in baseball history.

The New York Yankees jersey Ruth was wearing on that historic day was first sold at a private sale in 1991 for 0,000. When it came up for sale at Grey Flannel Auctions in 2005, the famous “called-shot” jersey brought a top bid of 0,000.

4. Babe Ruth 1919 World Series Curse Contract

Babe Ruth was sold by the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees in 1919. Many have speculated that this harebrained move spawned the infamous “The Curse of the Bambino,” whereby Boston was prevented from winning the World Series until the Red Sox finally broke the hex in 2004.

The original five-page contract sending Ruth to the Yankees sold at Sotheby’s and Sports Cards Plus Auctions for 6,000. Actor Charlie Sheen reportedly now owns this prime piece of sports memorabilia.

5. Babe Ruth Signed Sweet Spot Baseball

Babe Ruth signed a number of baseballs during his lifetime. There also exist quite a few Ruth secretarials and outright forgeries, so be careful.

Well-heeled collectors prefer balls signed by Ruth on the so-called “sweet spot” – that virgin area located between the descending and ascending red stitches. One such authenticated ball graded PSA near mint-mint+ 8.5 (out of 10) sold at Heritage Auction Galleries for ,787.50.

6. Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig Autographed Photo

Photos signed by Babe Ruth are always a hit with collectors. But when one can find a photo signed by both Ruth and fellow Yankee great Lou Gehrig (1903-1941), then there’s cause for celebration.

A July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig Day photo signed by Babe Ruth and Gehrig sold at Robert Edward Auctions for ,750.

7. Babe Ruth 1914 St. Mary’s Industrial School Yearbook

Celebrity high school yearbooks are big with collectors. Babe Ruth attended St. Mary’s Industrial School in Baltimore which, admittedly, was more a combination orphanage/reform school than a high school.

Babe Ruth’s 1914 “senior” yearbook – officially titled Forty-Sixth Annual Report St. Mary’s School For Boys and Thirty-Sixth Annual Report St. James’ Home Baltimore Maryland 1914 – fetched ,400 at Sotheby’s and Sports Cards Plus Auctions.

8. Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig 1928 The Sporting News Counter Display

Babe Ruth plugged a number of products during his lifetime. In 1928, the St. Louis-based The Sporting News used both Ruth and Lou Gehrig to promote their popular weekly publication. A stunning, previously unknown color die-cut advertising counter display featuring the Yankee duo brought ,000 at a Robert Edward Auctions.

9. Babe Ruth 1927 Babe Comes Home Movie Poster

In 1927, the Babe portrayed ballplayer Babe Dugan opposite Swedish beauty Anna Q. Nilsson in First National Pictures’ silent comedy-drama Babe Comes Home. The movie, unfortunately, is lost forever, with no copies known to exist.

To date only two original 27×41-inch one sheet Babe Comes Home movie posters have surfaced. One example – linen-backed for preservation purposes – sold for 8,000 at Heritage Auction Galleries.

10. Babe Ruth 1947 Signed The Babe Ruth Story Book Contract

On June 18, 1947, Babe Ruth and author Bob Considine inked a contract with publisher E.P. Dutton & Sons to write a book called The Babe Ruth Story. Royalty payments would be split 75-25, with Ruth getting the larger share as well as all radio, television and motion picture rights. The subsequent book was later published in April 1948.

The original Ruth/Considine four-page book contract – signed by the Babe as “George H. Ruth” – brought a top bid of ,187.50 at Robert Edward Auctions.

Dont delay and get into the game.  You will not be disappointed.  Below is a small sample of the starting pitching rankings.

Draft Strategy: When it comes to drafting starting pitchers, I have always held tight to a firm belief that its much better to go hitting early in drafts than pitching. In fact I almost always draft a hitter at the very least in the first four rounds of my drafts and even through as many as six rounds. The reasons are simple and are irrefutable. For one, hitters are much more durable and their performance is much more steady than a starting pitcher and that is huge when considering how valuable an early round draft pick is. You want to minimize as much risk as you can during those early rounds and have a player you select be as steady as possible in his numbers. Another reason is that pitchers are way more injury prone than hitters which again plays into the risk factor of picking them high. Yet another reason is that a hitter will help you everyday in fantasy baseball whereas a starting pitcher will only affect your roster once every five days. The effect of a hitter is much more and thus carries more value. With that in mind, I almost always bypass the top guys like Tim Lincecum, Roy Halladay, etc. and instead focus on starting pitcher 2’s who have high K rates. Last season that line of thinking got me Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt, Jon Lester, Ubaldo Jimenez, and Jered Weaver. Needless to say I dominated pitching. It is that line of thinking that all owners should have as they peruse the pitching market. Focus in on high strikeout guys who have had a history of success. Don’t shy away from previous aces off a down year as Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt both came back strong after poor 2009 seasons. Think Javier Vasquez this season as he goes back to the NL. Remember he was one of the best starters in baseball with the Braves in 2009. He could replicate that once again this season. Also when in doubt, go with the NL pitcher over the AL pitcher as I don’t have to explain to you how it is much easier to pitch in the former league. There is decent depth here so don’t panic if you don’t have a starter when round 5 starts. You can easily build a top notch staff if you follow those principles above.
1. Roy Halladay: The guy is amazing. There is no other way to describe his incredible performances years after year. Halladay is not a fireballer but he tops the 200 K mark due to the high amount of innings he tosses (250 last season not including playoffs) and he is annually one of the toughest pitchers to hit AND get a walk off of. Hence the ridiculously microscopic WHIP’s he puts up every year. The huge amount of innings he has thrown, especially last season is a concern but he thus far has not shown any signs of fatigue in his career. Hands down the top dog at the position. Its not even close.

Projection: 22-4 2.51 ERA 217 K 1.08 WHIP
2. Felix Hernandez: King Felix took a few years to work through his extreme youth when he first came up to the majors but he now has developed into the best starter in the AL. His season was very Roy Halladayish and the fact it came in the tougher American League speaks volumes. The ballpark is a help for sure but Hernandez would be awesome wherever he pitched. The scary part is that he is still only 25 which is just crazy to think how much better he can be. A long string of Cy Young’s could be in the works.

Projection: 15-7 2.41 ERA 243 K 1.10 WHIP 

I’m from a small rural town where we have a recreational baseball and softball program for Little League players up to Youth League Players through 8th grade. As with many small town leagues, the funding just doesn’t exist to get the kids quality, professional looking baseball uniforms. You might be thinking it’s only a uniform, what difference does it make? Believe it or not, the kids (even the boys) comment on other teams uniforms. The uniforms supplied by our baseball/softball program consist of a T-shirt, a ball cap that’s the same for all of the teams, and your basic baseball pants. The pants and the caps are fine, they’re the same quality as other teams, but it’s the T-shirts I have the problem with.

I know that the uniform does not make the player; however, if the kids are proud of their appearance, feel like a Professional, then that attitude will carry over into their game.

They’ll be proud of their team, proud of what they represent, and with that pride comes passion for the game and a winning attitude. It’s that winning attitude that truly makes the team, even if they lose the game, as long as they keep their pride and passion, and then they are already winners.

Quality Professional looking uniforms don’t have to cost a fortune; there are so many options available today. If the budget only allows for a T-shirt, shop around, there are a ton of companies that offer the high end uniforms who also carry other sports apparel. Talk to them about your budget and find out what you can get for the money. Don’t be afraid to contact more than one company, ask for bids. Generally, the more uniforms or apparel you order the better the price, keep this in mind. If you have a team of 13 ball players, but there are 4 other teams in the other age brackets also needing uniforms, get together, and use the numbers to your advantage.

Because my kids are so active in both Baseball and Football, my husband and I started our own business, Big Dog Sports and Fitness. Chicago Cubs baseball team is considered actually one of the most popular and most successful basketball tams in the league right now. However, since it is never just right to buy tickets to go and watch a game being played by a particular team simply because of the fact that many people are also watching the game, I think it is extremely important that you as a fan of the baseball game understand the team more so that you can determine whether this is really a team that you should spend your very precious time watching.

To begin with, it is important to take cognizant of the fact that this is actually one of the oldest teams that are currently in existence in the major North American Baseball league. It was formed in the year 1876, and it continued to be very popular during these years. In the 1920s the club saw the increased shareholding by Wrigley, who owned a chewing gum company. William Wrigley Jr. went a long way in ensuring the company was financially sound and that it was able to hire top talent.

One unique thing that has really made the cubs to be a well known sporting force is because of the “curse.” You have probably heard of the story where in the year 1941, a Mr. Sianis came with his goat to watch a game being played but the cubs, but was denied entry and told to take his goat out simply because the goat was producing some very bad smell. Because of this, Sianis was extremely offended and he said that the Chicago Cubs would never win a game. Well, the team has been performing quite dismally ever since, and you probably know their current title of “the loveable losers.” Whether the curse stuck or not, I am sure Mr. Wrigley would definitely not want chase out another goat from the stadium.

Despite the fact that the team has been known more for its loses and bad streaks, it is still important to note the fact that it still remains popular and watching it play its games will not really disappoint you. In fact, some better performing teams will sometimes play games that are far less entertaining than the games played by this team. So, if you are planning to lay your hands on the tickets of this team you will be doing yourself some really great favor.
