I had the Battlestar Galactica version, and to this day it’s my favorite of these Mattel games. Basically, missiles are fired at you from above and you have to shoot them out of the sky; the higher in the sky (ie. the higher on the screen) you hit the missiles, the more points you get.

Ah, baseball. It brings back memories of hot, summer days at the ballpark, hotdogs and popcorn. Ask any hockey fan and they will tell you that with the acceptance of fighting allowed in the NHL, it does indeed make the game of hockey even more exciting. Who can forget the blood-bath between the Detroit Red Wings Vs the Colorado Avalanche on March 26th back in 1997? Even the goalies in that infamous game came out of their perspective goal-crease’s, and went head-to-head in battle. The same applies with the sport of NASCAR racing. People definitely come out by the thousands to cheer on their favorite NASCAR driver, but anyone will tell you that there is not a shadow of doubt they morbidly salivate over the possibility of a car-wreak. If they denied this, there are lying. American’s love the taste and sight of blood in any sport. The game of soccer may render a shin-to-shin contact, that results in nothing more than a trainer applying a band-aid or two.

Baseball happens to be one of the most popular ball games in the United States. Though the other two popular team sports -basketball and football – are also categorized as ball games in the United States and North America, the popularity of baseball is such that the word ‘ballgame’ is usually referred to baseball and by association, the baseball field is known as the ballpark.

On the professional and amateur levels, baseball is popular in the Americas, East Asia, and in parts of the Caribbean. In the United States, it is the national pastime, and is quite a popular sport in countries, such as Japan, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Panama, South Korea, and Taiwan, among others. It is thought that baseball evolved from a bat and ball game called ‘Rounders’ that was brought to North America by the British and Irish immigrants.

In the beginning of the 18th century, the modern version of baseball started to develop in America, and by the 19th century, it came to be widely accepted as the national game. Major League Baseball (MLB), which handles baseball games in America, has in attendance the number of spectators equal to the attendance in all the other professional team sports combined.

Baseball And New York

New York, which offers the highest form of entertainment in the world, also offers its baseball fans great sporting entertainment. New York has two teams that play in the Major League Baseball.

One is the New York Yankees that is based at the Yankee Stadium. It started its career as a baseball team more than a century back in 1901 in Baltimore. Soon the team moved to New York, but it was only in April 1913 that it came to be called the Yankees. They built their own stadium, a triple decked structure – baseball’s first – in 1923 and had a capacity of 70,000.

The second professional baseball team of New York is the New York Mets that plays out of Shea Stadium. In comparison, it is a ‘relatively’ new team, and was formed in 1961.

New York City also has two Minor League Baseball teams – the Staten Island Yankees – affiliated to the New York Yankees, and the Brooklyn Cyclones – affiliated to the New York Mets.

Along with the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, 28 other teams from across the United States represent the National League and the American League to make up the MLB.
