PostHeaderIcon Retro Video Game Review: R.b.i. Baseball (Nes)

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

In the age when Nintendo put certain restraints on third-party developers creating alternative gaming choices for its Nintendo Entertainment System (thanks to the downfall of Atari, which had been caused by rampant developers rushing out sub-par titles to an already-inundated market), there was a modest little company called Tengen that released games with funny-looking cartridges. These titles, now legendary, were often classic and quirky, with a twist on the old Nintendo formula.

One of these games was RBI Baseball, a sports simulation with simple gameplayer, smudgy graphics, and the choice of actual Major League Baseball teams with then-current rosters. At first glance, it seemed to be a less glossy version of other baseball titles available. But, most importantly, was it fun?

Graphics

How far we have come in the video game universe! This game was definitely not emphasizing its looks, which were far from spectacular. The players were more like Russian doll figurines without discernable hands; merely knobs and nubs for hands and feet. They did not run across the field; rather, they slid across the screen, in a two-frame animation that switched every second. Although some of the details were comical (the way a player winced when they made an error), overall, graphics were obviously not this title’s strength.

Sound

The original music soundtrack was catchy and spot-on perfect, setting the mood for a lighthearted game of hardball. The in-game sound effects were quick, sharp, and fitting, even if nothing entirely special. It was the type of sound that was parallel to good movie special effects: So good, you hardly notice, and it blends right in.

Innovation

Baseball games had certainly been done before, even with an MLB license. All RBI Baseball did was put its own unique twist on the sports world.

Replay Value

Despite all its simplicity, RBI Baseball seemed to hone in on the precise formula needed for competitive, all-out fun two-player matches. Although games against the computer (including a season mode) were passable, the physics of the game were narrow and, with enough play, the A.I. was predictable and easily beatable.

But against human beings, where both sides utilized their unique pitch choices, creativity, and base-running decisions, this title truly shined. Whereas other baseball titles for the NES focused on glitz, glamour, and gadgetry, RBI Baseball laid low on the pageantry and just made itself a fun little game. Fun enough to earn three and a half stars out of five, in fact.

PostHeaderIcon Top 20 – Catcher (C) Rankings – 2010 Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide

Get ready for the 2010 Fantasy Baseball season by dominating your draft with some of the best fantasy baseball rankings, stat projections, and player info, all right here for free. Catcher (C) Rankings are based on a 1-year standard scoring system in mixed AL/NL fantasy baseball leagues for the 2010 season.

Scoring system stats include: runs scored, homeruns, rbi, stolen bases, and batting average – (R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG). AB = at bats during the 2009 season.

In these rankings, for a player to qualify at Catcher (C), they must have played in at least 10 games or started at least 5 games at the Catcher (C) position during the 2009 season. Each players 2010 fantasy baseball position eligibility and their age for the 2010 season is provided after their name.

Top 10 – Catcher (C) Rankings 2010

#1 – Joe Mauer - C – Minnesota Twins (27)

A breakout year last season has positioned Mauer as the clear cut #1 ranked catcher for fantasy baseball teams heading into the 2010 season. Expecting numbers in excess of 20 homeruns, 80 RBI, 80 runs scored, and a .300 batting average, seems like money in the bank as long as Mauer can stay healthy and tally 500 at bats during the 2010 season.

2009 Stats: 523 AB, 94 R, 28 HR, 96 RBI, 4 SB, .365 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 90 R, 25 HR, 90 RBI, 3 SB, .330 AVG

#2 – Brian McCann – C – Atlanta Braves (26)

After Joe Mauer, Brian McCann is my easy choice as the #2 catcher over Victor Martinez entering the 2010 fantasy baseball season. While Martinez typically receives more headlines and attention from fantasy baseball owners, McCann who is five years younger than Martinez, seems like the better bet for fantasy teams heading into the 2010 season. Add to that the fact that McCann at just age 26 for the 2010 season likely hasn’t even reached his peak yet, and he has already produced three 20 plus homerun seasons, three 90 plus RBI season, and two seasons of tallying a .300 plus batting average during just his first four years in the MLB, and you have to like your odds with McCann on your fantasy team this season.

2009 Stats: 488 AB, 63 R, 21 HR, 94 RBI, 4 SB, .281 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 70 R, 25 HR, 95 RBI, 3 SB, .295 AVG

#3 – Víctor Martinez – C/1B – Boston Red Sox (31)

A move to Boston for the second half of last season seemed to work wonders for Martinez’s stat line. With an entire year in the potent Boston lineup during the 2010 season, Martinez could have a chance at posting career highs this season. As a combo C/1B option, Martinez offers fantasy baseball teams that highly sought after and much needed position versatility. Another season of 20 homeruns, 100 RBI and a .300 batting average seem like a good bet for Martinez in 2010.

2009 Stats: 588 AB, 88 R, 23 HR, 108 RBI, 1 SB, .303 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 80 R, 20 HR, 95 RBI, 0 SB, .295 AVG

#4 – Matt Wieters – C – Baltimore Orioles (24)

With hitting skills comparable to Joe Mauer, the young 24 year old Matt Wieters could easily have a breakout season this year. Considered to be a future All-Star in the making, Wieters should take over the full time starting catching duties in Baltimore this season, while also claiming a middle of the batting order spot in the lineup.

2009 Stats: 354 AB, 35 R, 9 HR, 43 RBI, 0 SB, .288 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 65 R, 18 HR, 75 RBI, 5 SB, .290 AVG

#5 – Mike Napoli – C – Los Angeles Angels (28)

Often flying under the radar in fantasy baseball leagues, Napoli and his 20 homeruns from the catcher position is downright solid gold for fantasy teams. And after bringing up his batting average to a consistent .273 clip over each of the past two years, Napoli doesn’t seem to carry around that batting average stigma anymore that was once a category killer for fantasy teams. Combine that to the fact that Napoli may see additional at bats as a DH this year, and fantasy baseball teams could easily be looking at a career year from Napoli in 2010.

2009 Stats: 382 AB, 60 R, 20 HR, 56 RBI, 3 SB, .272 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 70 R, 25 HR, 70 RBI, 5 SB, .270 AVG

#6 – Miguel Montero – C – Arizona Diamondbacks (27)

After an injury to Chris Snyder forced Montero into the everyday starting catching job for the Diamondbacks last season, Montero made sure he took full advantage of his golden opportunity. Once a highly touted prospect for the Diamondbacks, Montero seized his opportunity last season and has emerged as the catcher of the future for the Diamondbacks entering the 2010 season. While there is the potential that Montero regresses this season after last years breakout, there is also the potential that Montero performs even better in 2010. Fantasy baseball teams looking at drafting Montero this season can expect a high reward high risk pick.

2009 Stats: 425 AB, 61 R, 16 HR, 59 RBI, 1 SB, .294 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 70 R, 18 HR, 70 RBI, 0 SB, .285 AVG

#7 – Geovany Soto – C – Chicago Cubs (27)

With injuries derailing Soto’s sophomore year that ultimately ended as a gigantic bust for fantasy teams, many of those burned teams will have a hard time gambling on Soto again this season. However, Soto’s hitting abilities are still there, and any catcher who can tally 20 homeruns and 80 RBI’s needs to be on the fantasy baseball radar. A huge comeback year could be in store for Soto in 2010, so don’t wait too long to take a gamble on him in your fantasy baseball draft.

2009 Stats: 331 AB, 27 R, 11 HR, 47 RBI, 1 SB, .218 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 65 R, 18 HR, 75 RBI, 0 SB, .280 AVG

#8 – Kurt Suzuki – C – Oakland Athletics (26)

Entering his fourth year in the MLB, Suzuki has slowly come into his own and after posting a career year last season, he is starting to gain the trust of fantasy teams heading into the 2010 season. If Oakland can improve their offense at all this season, Suzuki could easily post career highs once again this year. And as an added benefit for fantasy teams, a double digit stolen base season could be in store for Suzuki as well this season.

2009 Stats: 570 AB, 74 R, 15 HR, 88 RBI, 8 SB, .274 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 70 R, 12 HR, 75 RBI, 10 SB, .280 AVG

#9 – Russell Martin – C – Los Angeles Dodgers (27)

My how the mighty have fallen. Can you believe that at this time last season, many had Russell Martin ranked as the #1 overall fantasy baseball catcher entering the 2009 season. With a career worst season last year, one would think that Martin could only go up from there for the 2010 season. I would expect a bounce back year, but not a huge bounce back. Still, any catcher that has the potential to tally double digit homeruns and stolen bases, clearly needs to garner starter consideration for fantasy teams.

2009 Stats: 505 AB, 63 R, 7 HR, 53 RBI, 11 SB, .250 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 75 R, 10 HR, 70 RBI, 10 SB, .280 AVG

#10 – Jorge Posada – C – New York Yankees (39)

While many may only see Posada’s 22 homeruns and 81 RBI’s from last season, I am focusing more on the number 39….as in the age that Posada will turn during the 2010 season. At a demanding position like catcher, it is extremely hard to envision Posada’s 39 year old legs holding up as well as they did last season for him again in 2010. If Posada is available late in your leagues draft he is a solid pick, but anything higher than this #10 ranking among catchers would not be a gamble worth taking.

2009 Stats: 383 AB, 55 R, 22 HR, 81 RBI, 1 SB, .285 AVG

2010 Stat Projections: 50 R, 15 HR, 70 RBI, 0 SB, .280 AVG

.

Catcher (C) Rankings: #11-20

#11 – Chris Iannetta – C – Colorado Rockies (27)

#12 – Ryan Doumit – C – Pittsburgh Pirates (29)

#13 – Bengie Molina – C – San Francisco Giants (36)

#14 – John Baker – C – Florida Marlins (29)

#15 – A.J. Pierzynski – C – Chicago White Sox (33)

#16 – Yadier Molina – C – St. Louis Cardinals (27)

#17 – Jesus Flores – C – Washington Nationals (25)

#18 – Jarrod Saltalamacchia – C – Texas Rangers (25)

#19 – Alex Avila – C – Detroit Tigers (23)

#20 – Lou Marson – C – Cleveland Indians (24)

PostHeaderIcon Creating Great Baseball Trading Pins ? Use Your Imagination

Custom trading pins are a cherished part of youth sports today, with an increasing number of young athletes sharing the fun of trading pins at games and tournaments across the nation. Nowhere is this more true than in the world of youth baseball. As a result, increasing numbers of coaches and parents are learning the ins and outs of ordering pins.

Designing and ordering great trading pins isn’t hard. With a little bit of information about how they’re made, and the help of a great supplier, trading pins are fast, easy and fun to order.

Whether you’re an experienced customer or a first-timer, ordering trading pins can be made easier with a little advance planning. In the past few years, trading pins have evolved in new directions. New technologies, styles and great new options make exciting new designs possible in ways you might not have imagined.

Trading pins are available in several styles, depending on both your design and budget. Soft enamel pins are by far the most popular style of trading pins. These rich, detailed, durable pins are the most sought-after pins you can buy.

If you need to reproduce a painting, photo or organizational logo precisely, offset digital printed trading pins are a great choice. These pins print your design directly onto the metal.

Photo etched trading pins can be an economical way to get great looking pins at an economical price. These will not generally be as durable as soft enamel trading pins, however.

The most basic thing to decide once you’re ready to start designing your team’s trading pins is the size of the pins. It’s a simple fact of life that, all other things being equal, bigger pins trade better than smaller ones. The bigger your trading pins are, the more room there is to showcase your design.

Another advantage of bigger pins is that they give you the opportunity to add bigger and more options. If you really want to make your trading pins the ones that everyone at the ballpark wants, go for the add-ons.

Glitter enamel is a great place to start with options for trading pins, especially if you’re on a tight budget. It’s an inexpensive way to add richness and sparkle to your team’s trading pins.

Danglers are a great way to showcase the year your team is in the tournament. These secondary pins hang from the main trading pins, and can also be used to show your team’s state or region. If your budget is tight, you can use the same main pins for multiple years and just add new danglers.

If you want to really increase the trading power of your team’s pins, add motion. Sliders, spinners and bobbles all add a “play” element to the trading pins and create a hard to miss, eye-catching look.

If your team mascot appears on your trading pins, you can even give them blinking LED eyes. How cool is that? The blinkers also can be customized for other styles as well.

Ultimately, your trading pins are limited only by your imagination. Get creative when designing this year’s pins and your players’ trading pins will be second only to their performance on the field!

PostHeaderIcon Baseball – How It Is Played

Baseball is a game that is played with a bat and a ball between two teams having nine players each on a special field. Baseball is a very popular game in America and it is recognized as America’s national sport.

To win the game, each team is required to score the highest amount of runs, to score more than the other team. This game has one of the most peculiar ways of making a score. The job of the batsman is to hit the ball a large distance as much as possible so that they will have ample time to quickly make a  score on a track that is like a diamond in shape with its four corners called bases.

The batsmen can run to each base and when a batsman runs from the hitting base to all three bases and back, one score is counted. The batsmen have time just until the ball is returned by the members of the other team’s fielding to their mates posted on the bases. Once the ball is received back, the batting team cannot run any further or else they would be declared ‘tag-out’.

Also, two members of the batting team cannot be at one base at the same time or else one of them would be declared ‘tag-out’. It is like a successive run. One member runs to a post, followed by another member while the first one runs to the next base and so on until they reach the original base, the batting base and turn to the pavilion while one run is counted.

A home-run is a run scored by a member of the batting team by touching all four bases successfully without the ball being returned in time to obscure him from making a run and restraining his run to any of the first, second or third base after the batting base.

The players of each team are required to wear a distinctive set of baseball jerseys and also there are some special equipments like gloves, cleats and helmets for the team members.

PostHeaderIcon Professional Baseball Bats; Choose Bats That Work For You!

Article by Darren Pace

There is certainly no dearth of theories that allegedly help buyers to pick the perfect piece from the assortment of professional baseball bats available in the market. However, these principles often disappoint sorely with players discovering that the bat they just spend heavily on is simply not working for them. Without a doubt the ideal bat can enhance your performance on the field immensely but you need to ask yourself if you really have the skills of Manny Ramirez or Albert Pujols to pick a bat that they would choose? Instead, follow the tips given below to choose baseball bats that are just right for you.

The Length: This is the very first consideration when purchasing professional baseball bats and everybody from doting parents who are buying the first baseball bat for their little leaguer to the pros consider this factor. The most important thing to remember when picking the right length is your comfort factor, the length should feel right to you.

For instance, if you are a tall 17 year old who can achieve good bat speed with the wrist and legs, you can consider a longer bat (35 to 35 inches) which will give you more leverage and enhanced plate coverage which equates to higher power. However, a person with average height will do well with a bat that is in the range of 32 to 33 inches. You could also use a mathematical formula for choosing the correct bat length; divide your height by 3 and add 5 to the result. For example, if you height is 66 inches, by applying the formula, the right bat size for you will be 27 inches.

The Weight: The second factor to consider is the weight of the bat; the lightest bat will still offer the best “pop”. If you are not in the minor leagues, you may want to get an aluminum composite bat that gives you just the right feel. The advantage of buying the metal version is that it generally outlasts the wooden bats; also, the weight of the bat is lighter than a wooden piece of the same length.

For instance, if your chosen bat length is 33 inches but you would like the bat to be lighter than 33 oz, you may want to go for the “-4″ aluminum composite metal bat. These baseball bats will weigh no more than 29 oz even for 33 inches, so you will be able to generate greater speed.

A mathematical formula is also in place to determine the correct bat weight; simply divide the weight of the player by 18 and add 14 to the result. For example, if the weight of the player is 70 lbs, by applying the formula, we get a bat weight of 17.89 oz. This means that any bat which weighs less than 18 0z should work perfectly for this player.

The feel: This is the final consideration when choosing baseball bats; while there may not be a mathematical formula to deduct the comfort level that a particular bat provides, this factor can greatly influence your performance. If you are not very comfortable with your bat, you can be reasonably sure that it will mar the power in your swings. So, don’t just arbitrarily pick a bat, spend some time with the pieces that you like in the batting cage and try swinging the professional baseball bats to see how they perform.

When buying baseball bats for children, make sure that they can comfortably swing the bat without struggling. A lot of young players would like to boast about playing with the longest and heaviest bat out there. However, this can negatively impact their technique and performance.

With the right combination of length, weight and feel, you should be able to choose professional baseball bats that are perfect for you. So, go ahead and play with the right bat, so that you can get some hard line drives in.

PostHeaderIcon Information For The Finest Baseball Equipment

Article by William Smith

In today’s baseball world the baseball equipment has improved drastically from yesteryear. Let us examine some of the improvements in this article.

Established baseball equipment has benefited by the improvement of new materials for sports gear. The accessories to the pastime have progressed way beyond the plain bat bag and uniforms for all leagues of sports.

Present days, there are toys for everyone interested in baseball, whether little league or minors, even pro players and coaches, that make for great items to supply to those you know established in the sport. For catchers, a specific helmet will often win as a gift, especially since elements of the pro level variety of helmets are now out there for minor leaguers.

Comfort padding systems and linings that are designed to maintain the head and face fresh and sweat-free make for easier concentration behind the plate. Catchers can also maintain more freedom and comfort when you take great care to obtain a helmet that has a specialized chin pad, such as the softened deer skin commonly worn. These days knee pads and shin guard is called sliders, and they have improved.

Customarily, a combination of four dissimilar materials are worn to step up the measure of comfort and quality. A blend of polyester, nylon, rayon and elastic produce spongy comfort. The foam padding is thick, but not cumbersome, as in the earlier variety of pads.

The miracle material of the latter portion of the century has found its way into the manufacture of baseball equipment as well. That being the extreme breathable and lightweight neoprene. Interior grippers supply no slide grip, from the inside, which is a component you’ll wish to check for as well.
